Moderna on Friday said the Food and Drug Administration has delayed the approval of its vaccine for respiratory syncytial virus to the end of May due to "administrative constraints" at the agency. The FDA was expected to make a decision on the RSV shot on Sunday. If cleared, the RSV shot would become the company's second product to launch in the U.S. after its once-blockbuster Covid vaccine. It would also be the third RSV vaccine to enter the market after shots from Pfizer and GSK rolled out last year. But the company said it was able to make the implant more sensitive to increase its performance even further. About a month after the operation, Musk said Arbaugh could control a computer mouse with his brain after having the chip implanted. Like existing brain-machine interfaces, the company’s implant would collect electrical signals sent out by the brain and interpret them as actions. A California company is recalling organic walnuts that were sold at natural food stores and coop retailers in 19 states because of an E. coli outbreak that has sickened 12 people and hospitalized seven, federal officials said. The recall came after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notified the company of 12 recorded illnesses that were linked to the walnuts. They were distributed at more than 300 food retailers, including Whole Foods Market, New Seasons Market and Rosauers Supermarkets, the F.D.A. An investigation is underway to determine the potential source of the contamination, the F.D.A. The company did not immediately respond to inquiries on Wednesday.

The Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday said it is challenging hundreds of alleged "junk" patents held by pharmaceutical companies for 20 brand-name drugs, including Novo Nordisk's blockbuster drugs Ozempic, Saxenda and Victoza. The FTC issued letters to 10 companies, warning them that certain drug patents were improperly listed. Many of the drug patents are for Type 2 diabetes, along with asthma and inhalers for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. Generic drugmakers can only launch cheaper versions of a branded drug if the patents have expired or are successfully challenged in court. The FTC first challenged dozens of branded drug patents last fall, leading three drugmakers to comply and delist their patents with the FDA.

The US Department of Justice is expected to recommend that marijuana be rescheduled as a Schedule III controlled substance, a classification shared by prescription drugs such as ketamine and Tylenol with codeine. The standard rulemaking process is lengthy, is subject to a public comment period, and could take months to complete. However, rescheduling marijuana will not solve that federal-state conflict, the Congressional Research Service noted in a January 16 brief. States with medical marijuana programs do currently have some federal protections in place via appropriations legislation that restricts the Justice Department from interfering in those programs. The FDA’s scientific and medical evaluation of marijuana did not address products containing plant-derived cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD.

Now, a new study, building upon previous evidence, has found that among teens, vaping often may spike the risk of exposure to lead and uranium — potentially harming brain and organ development in young people. However, chronic exposure to metals, “even at low levels, can lead to detrimental health impacts, affecting cardiovascular, renal, cognitive and psychiatric functions,” she added. The study was conducted at one point in time, so the authors couldn’t control for chronic or long-term exposure. The authors acknowledged that their study is observational, meaning it didn’t find a causal relationship between vaping and toxic metal levels. But knowing why this preference led to higher uranium exposure requires more research.
